A reflective layer within the roof system

Enviro-Tuff uses a low-emissivity reflective surface to reduce radiant heat transfer when installed beside the required air space. Construction, reinforcement and aluminium surfaces differ between grades.

Reflective foil and bulk polyester insulation can be complementary parts of a professionally designed roof. A tested system R-value is not the intrinsic R-value of the thin foil sheet.

Compare the four grades

Values below are the manufacturer’s stated classifications and ASTM C518 system thermal resistance, with a ±10% tolerance on thermal values. Match the product grade and installation conditions to the design.

Air gaps and test conditions

The ASTM C518 system results use a 40 mm upper air gap at 50°C and a 60 mm lower air gap at 10°C. The ISO 8302 results use 40 mm at 35°C above and 60 mm at 20°C below. These conditions are part of the reported performance.

ISO 8302 system values are 1.49 for 201 FR, 1.86 for 202 FR, 1.49 for 202 ECO and 2.42 m²·K/W for 203 ECO, each ±10%. Do not add these assembly results directly to another complete assembly’s R-value.

ENVIRO-TUFF

201 FR

single-sided aluminium

Grammage
80 g/m² ±10%
Fire classification
B/B3

A three-layer laminate of aluminium foil, PE tie layer and reinforced HDPE woven fabric. Nominal width is 1250 mm ±5 mm and minimum roll length is 36 m.

The sheet lists aluminium emissivity ≤0.05 and water vapour permeance ≤0.002 g/(s·MN).

ENVIRO-TUFF

202 FR

double-sided aluminium

Grammage
117 g/m² ±10%
Fire classification
A/A1

A five-layer laminate with aluminium foil on both sides of a woven HDPE core and PE tie layers. Nominal width is 1250 mm ±5 mm and minimum roll length is 40 m.

The manufacturer sheet states SANS 428 Class A/A1, with reference to SANS 10177 Parts 5 and 10. Select against the project fire requirements rather than assuming one classification covers every use.

ENVIRO-TUFF

202 ECO

aluminium and metallised PET

Grammage
90 g/m² ±10%
Fire classification
B/B1

ENVIRO-TUFF 202 ECO combines aluminium, PE tie layers, leno reinforcement and metallised polyester. Nominal width is 1250 mm ±5 mm and minimum length is 36 m.

The two surfaces are different: stated aluminium emissivity is ≤0.05 and MPET emissivity is ≤0.50. Orientation and the adjacent air space therefore matter.

ENVIRO-TUFF

203 ECO

heavier reinforced construction

Grammage
245 g/m² ±10%
Fire classification
B/B1/2/H (SP)

A six-layer construction with aluminium surfaces, PE tie layers, a paper core and fibreglass reinforcement. Nominal width is 1250 mm ±5 mm and minimum roll length is 40 m.

The quoted system thermal resistance is higher than the other three grades under the stated test configurations. Suitability still depends on the roof design, exposure and fire requirements.

Installation and environmental exposure

An air space between the foil and battens is vital. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements and the specified roof build-up.

Condensation, sea salts, acidic vapours and corrosive liquids or mists can tarnish aluminium and affect emissivity. Assess exposure before choosing a product.

Frequently asked questions

Does reflective foil need an air gap?

Yes. The adjacent air space is essential to reflective performance and is part of the published test configurations.

Can it be combined with polyester insulation?

Yes, where the roof design allows. The complete assembly needs to be assessed rather than simply adding unrelated system R-values.

Which grade should appear on the BOQ?

Identify the exact grade, roll dimensions and required installation, fire and thermal criteria. The four grades are not interchangeable.
